The Funny Side Of Cleaning

High Speed Burnisher

My First Experience With a High Speed Burnisher

It was late on a Friday and my boss at the time came to me with a request to burnish a hallway over the weekend. Not just any hallway, but the hallway in the executive office area. “Ok” I thought, I can do this.” So began my first experience with a high speed burnisher.

At the time, it was early in my cleaning career and I had been part of the janitorial crew for several months. While I had seen the normal floor crew high speed burnishing several times, I had never done it myself. They made it look easy enough. I had also recently learned to run the low speed floor machine, and was fairly comfortable with that skill. So, running the high speed burnisher shouldn’t be a big deal right? I couldn’t have been more wrong. Read more

Ride On Robot Vacuum? Autonomous Cleaning Equipment

I have seen a lot of crazy things in my cleaning career, but this one is new to me. I have never been a fan of the robot vacuum. First of all, they are really more gimmicks than anything else. But the fact that they just meander around, with no consistency just drives me nuts. Obviously they are strictly for residential use only. But a commercial cleaning robot might just be the wave of the not so distant future. Read more

Cleaning Humor – When Port-a-Toilets Don’t Flush

Cleaning Humor – Port-a-Toilet

Cleaning Humor - Port a toilet funny sign

I have always been one that hates hand written signs on restroom fixtures. When a toilet is out-of-order, just state that it is out-of-order. When I catch you lying to me about why it isn’t in service, it makes me wonder. Is this just reserved for important people? Did the guy with the key just say “I’ll save this one for myself.” or “I am going to catch a few minutes of shut-eye. I’ll just take this one out of commission for a while.”

What ever the reason, it was frustrating to see when the line was as long as it was.

Cleaning Chemical – Selling Kenny Brooks Style

Cleaning Chemical Selling – Kenny Brooks Style

I have known sales people my entire life, many of which sold cleaning chemical. I have never wanted to buy something as bad as I want to buy this. Not because of the cleaning product, but because of the sales person. It isn’t the product that sells, it’s the results of the product and the result of this product is the entertainment provided by the person selling it. (Well it also looks like it works too!)

I would buy this cleaning chemical from Kenny Brooks.

“I have a disease called Enthusiasm” Kenny Brooks does a lot of talking in this video, but when you listen to what he has to say, he does know what he is talking about. Cleaning is science and you have to have at the minimum, a little knowledge of what you are using.

Cleaning chemical selling can be a hazardous activity. If you do not know what your product can do or more importantly, what it cannot do. I have demonstrated cleaning chemical and flopped. I never tell anyone that it will absolutely work. Because, as soon as you do, you are going to run into something that it won’t clean.

Over Selling A Cleaning Chemical

If you sell cleaning or cleaning chemicals, you should know what you are selling. Too often, I talk to customers that say they know more than the sales people they deal with. And you know what? They do! Cleaning is a personal activity. It takes a lot of work, but you can draw a lot of pride from it as well.

When a sales person tells a customer that their product can absolutely solve their problem, it becomes a challenge to prove them wrong. I’ve always approached it as a team effort. I know my products. I know what I have done with them. It may be the best cleaning product ever, but I have never used them in your facility. Your unique and personal to you, facility. So if you are having a problem, or cannot get a certain area clean, lets go try what I have. Lets troubleshoot it together.

Kenny here, solves problems and adds some fun to it as well. Way to go Kenny Brooks. You are a true sales person.

brown paper towels

Brown Paper Is No Longer Only Post Consumer

While browsing the headlines to day, I saw this article from the Wall Street Journal on the brown paper trend to promote green cleaning. It reminded me of a humorous encounter I had while selling paper products early in my career.

Years ago, when I first made the switch to selling cleaning supplies from managing cleaning operations, I was working the showroom for a cleaning supply distributor. A very nice lady came in and was asking about paper products for her church. She explained that the church didn’t really have a paper program in place and that they had been relying on members to supply their toilet tissue and towels. I guess this system had faltered, leaving them out of supplies during a busy Sunday service. Read more

Cleaning Public Restrooms

Cleaning Public Restrooms No Shortcuts

When it comes to visiting public restrooms, I always have an opinion on the cleanliness. Either it is a positive one or it’s one that comes with some constructive criticism on cleaning public restrooms.

Having cleaned public restrooms for decades, I would like to say that I have seen it all. But unfortunately, I know this isn’t true. It amazes me how people treat public restrooms. I know it is not the personal sanctuary you probably enjoy at home, but it is still a very personal space for most people. Taking a little more pride in the facilities or showing respect for other peoples property is just the right thing to do. Read more
