Cleaning Appearance

Cleaning For Appearance and Why We Clean

Cleaning appearance is what we are judged on. But is that the reason we clean? There is a lot of attention paid to teaching a cleaning staff how to clean. This is usually centered around the proper use of tools and products. While knowing the best ways to use cleaning chemicals and equipment is important, it has little effect on the end results if there is not at least a basic understanding of the reasons for using them. To know how to clean, you must first understand why to clean. Continue Reading

Fixing Restroom Odors

Fixing Restroom Odor – Do You Know Where To Clean?

Do restroom odors indicate a lack of work? I don’t think so. I believe it is due to a lack of knowledge. It has been said many times that the quality of work trumps the quantity of work. Another favorite is work smart, not hard. Both of these are extremely evident in the world of cleaning. Hundreds of thousands of custodians, housekeepers and janitors go through the motions of cleaning, working hard everyday without accomplishing very much at all. This is not smart, but is it their fault? Fixing restroom odors is easy if you know where to clean.  Read more

Basketball Floor – The 2012 Final Four Floor

This video is a very accurate demonstration of what goes into a hardwood basketball floor. Although this floor is only used a few times, many other floors that are used everyday for years go through a similar manufacturing and assembly process. When you stop to think about how many people, touch the boards and how many locations the lumber passes through, before being installed in the venue, there is a lot more to a basketball floor than just playing sports on it. Cleaning Blogs

9 Great Cleaning Blogs You May Not Know About

As the author of this and several other blogs, I am always looking for great examples of cleaning blogs. There are an estimated 1 million blogs started everyday, most left abandoned after a short time. The reason I chose to start writing a cleaning blog was because there were not many places on the web to find cleaning industry information that was not product based or supported. Although most of these blogs are connected to  products and/or services of some sort, they focus on and provide great information and experience. Please visit them and let them know what you think. Preventing the spread of germs

Germs Germs Germs – Avoid the Flu With Clean

The Illusion of Killing Germs

“I am going to need a case of (spray disinfectant) to avoid the flu germs!” I recently saw this comment from a friend that was faced with a case of the flu spreading through the house. I always cringe when I hear people say this out of desperation.

Avoiding and fighting the spread of germs is a subject that, as many of you know, puts me on edge. While many blindly have faith in the brand name products to protect the health of their families and employee’s, they don’t realize how under-informed they are about how their use. Just like any type of “bug” killer or medication, if not used correctly, can have counter productive and dangerous results.

As I talk about in “Do You Read Chemical Labels?” the correct information is right there on the bottle or can. These are often overlooked because of the evasive marketing message that makes users believe these products can kill germs with a quick spritz or wipe down, while the directions tell a much different story.
